Powering the Future: How We Chose Battery Technology for a 30-Year Space Station
Our research into energy storage technologies for Project Dyson's L4/L5 Processing Station reveals why lithium-ion batteries remain the practical choice despite their limitations, and what the future may hold.

When you are designing a Processing Station destined for a Lagrange point 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, every component choice carries weight. But few decisions are as consequential as selecting the energy storage system that will keep the station alive through thirty years of continuous operation.
The challenge seems straightforward at first: store enough energy to power the station during eclipse periods and handle load transients. But when three AI models proposed capacity requirements ranging from 200 MWh to 500 MWh, using fundamentally different battery technologies, we knew this question demanded rigorous investigation.
The Core Challenge
Project Dyson's Phase 0 Processing Station requires 100 MW of generation capacity paired with substantial energy storage. At the L4/L5 Lagrange points, eclipse cycles occur approximately every 12 hours. Over 30 years, that translates to roughly 22,000 deep discharge cycles.
Here is the uncomfortable truth about lithium-ion batteries: they typically warrant only 3,000 to 5,000 cycles to 80% depth of discharge. Even the most optimistic projections show that Li-ion systems would require 2-3 complete replacements over the station's lifetime. At L4/L5, where resupply missions cost billions, this is not a minor inconvenience.
What the Research Revealed
Our literature review drew on papers spanning fundamental degradation mechanisms to cutting-edge machine learning diagnostics. The findings paint a nuanced picture.
The Sigmoidal Truth of Battery Aging
The foundational work by Johnen et al. on long-term capacity degradation modeling (arxiv:1907.12961) establishes that Li-ion batteries do not degrade linearly. Instead, capacity follows an S-curve through three distinct phases:
- Initial rapid decline (first 500-1000 cycles): 5-10% capacity loss as the battery "breaks in"
- Plateau phase (1000-3000 cycles): Slow, predictable decline of 0.5-2% per thousand cycles
- Accelerated decline (beyond 3000 cycles): Nonlinear degradation as accumulated damage reaches critical thresholds
For our 22,000-cycle application, even the most durable lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry enters that dangerous third phase multiple times over.
The Hidden Killer: Calendar Aging
Perhaps more sobering is research on calendar aging. Independent of cycling, batteries degrade simply by existing. The seminal work by Pinson and Bazant (arxiv:1210.3672) on solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation explains why: this protective layer on the anode grows continuously, consuming cyclable lithium at a rate of 0.1-0.5% per month at room temperature.
Our projections show that calendar aging alone reduces Li-ion batteries to 50-80% capacity in 20 years. Combined with cycle aging, realistic replacement intervals fall to 10-12 years.
The Flow Battery Alternative
Flow batteries, particularly vanadium redox systems (VRFB), offer an attractive alternative on paper. With demonstrated cycle lives exceeding 20,000 cycles and electrolytes that can be rebalanced and restored, a 30-year lifespan becomes achievable with only periodic membrane replacement.
Optimization studies on VRFB systems (arxiv:2211.12333, arxiv:2107.03339) confirm their operational flexibility. But there is a catch that no amount of optimization can overcome: energy density. Flow batteries achieve only 25-35 Wh/kg compared to 150-250 Wh/kg for Li-ion. A 500 MWh VRFB system would mass 15,000-20,000 tonnes.
At current launch costs, that mass penalty translates to $60-100 billion in additional transportation expense, overwhelming any lifecycle cost savings.
The Promise of Tomorrow: Solid-State and Sodium-Ion
Emerging technologies offer hope for future missions. Solid-state batteries, with their theoretical 10,000+ cycle life and non-flammable electrolytes, could be transformative. Reviews of solid electrolyte advances (arxiv:2203.09269, arxiv:2307.00998) show ionic conductivity approaching practical thresholds.
Similarly, sodium-ion technology (arxiv:2412.00340, arxiv:2511.08449) offers abundant raw materials and comparable energy density to LFP cells. But both technologies remain at technology readiness levels too low for immediate deployment.
The Radiation Unknown
One finding troubled us deeply: the literature search revealed no direct studies of battery performance in deep-space radiation environments. The L4/L5 points lie outside Earth's protective magnetosphere, exposing equipment to galactic cosmic rays and solar energetic particles.
We can theorize about polymer separator degradation, electrolyte radiolysis, and electrode damage from radiation. But without empirical data, these remain educated guesses. This represents a critical knowledge gap that Project Dyson must address through dedicated testing programs.
Our Recommendation
Despite their limitations, lithium-ion LFP batteries with planned 10-12 year replacement cycles represent the most practical baseline for the Processing Station.
The reasoning centers on three factors:
Launch economics dominate. The 6x mass penalty of flow batteries is simply prohibitive. No amount of lifecycle savings can offset tens of billions in additional launch costs.
Space heritage matters. Li-ion has extensive flight heritage across hundreds of missions. Flow batteries have none. For a $9.2 trillion program, certification risk cannot be dismissed.
Replacement enables upgrades. Counterintuitively, the need for periodic replacement creates opportunities. By 2035-2040, solid-state batteries may be ready for deployment. Each replacement cycle allows technology insertion that a "build once" flow battery system would preclude.
We also recommend serious evaluation of a hybrid architecture: 200 MWh of Li-ion for high-power transients and eclipse bridging, combined with 300 MWh of flow battery storage for bulk storage and extended contingencies. This configuration could reduce Li-ion cycle count by 50-70%, potentially extending replacement intervals to 15-18 years.
The Road Ahead
This research answered our immediate question, but it also illuminated the path forward:
Initiate radiation testing for candidate Li-ion chemistries. We cannot design with confidence until we understand how batteries behave at L4/L5.
Develop detailed power profiles to resolve the 200-500 MWh capacity question. The answer depends on operational scenarios we must model thoroughly.
Monitor solid-state development for technology insertion opportunities during replacement cycles.
Evaluate ISRU vanadium extraction as a long-term option. If asteroid-sourced vanadium becomes available, local VRFB manufacturing could change the calculus entirely.
Energy storage for a 30-year space station cannot be solved with any single technology available today. Success requires accepting impermanence, planning for replacement, and remaining ready to adopt better solutions as they mature. In space as on Earth, the best engineering often means designing not just for what is, but for what will be.
